Practical Nursing
Program Mission
The Practical Nursing Program of Northwest Technical Institute, in partnership with the NWA community, is committed to providing nursing education to serve the educational needs of students wishing to enter a recognized health care profession so they may achieve competence requirements for licensure by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing.
About Practical Nursing
Practical nurses perform bedside nursing skills, interact with patients and their families, administer medications, function as team members and charge nurses. Practical nurses are employed in hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, outpatient centers, and in home health care. NTI’s Practical Nursing Program graduates are in high demand in the NWA community.
Articulation Opportunities
NTI's PN graduates may also qualify to enroll in the Associate Degree Nursing program at NWACC or the Bachelor's Degree of Nursing program at U of A.
State Licensure Exam
Upon successful completion of the Practical Nursing program, the student is eligible to graduate from NTI and apply for licensure with the Arkansas State Board of Nursing.
Completion of the Practical Nursing program does not guarantee eligibility for licensure by the State of Arkansas. Persons convicted of certain crimes may not be eligible to write the NCLEX-PN according to Act 1208 of 1999.
File Completion Requirements
- Submit COMPASS and TEAS test scores.
- Submit an official copy of your high school transcript or GED scores.
- Submit official college transcripts, if applicable.
- Provide immunization records for measles/rubella (only if born on or after January 1, 1957).
- Provide two references (Job or Personal).

Practical Nursing Objectives
- To demonstrate understanding that each client is an individual and that illness may represent a temporary deviation from normal.
- To apply basic nursing skills, critical thinking, and scientific principles in nursing situations respecting cultural diversity.
- To utilize the nursing process in the care of the client.
- To demonstrate safe nursing practice in the care of the client.
- To demonstrate personal responsibility for his/her actions, recognizing legal and ethical implications involved in the care of the client.
- To recognize that education is continuous and each nurse has the responsibility to utilize resources available to him/her.
- To demonstrate professionalism in the clinical area.
- To demonstrate effective communication skills when interacting with the client, the client's family, and all health care providers.
- To identify methods and practice appropriate leadership and delegation skills in the care of the client.
- To demonstrate an understanding of the concepts taught in all facets of the Practical Nursing program as they relate to the care of the client throughout the life span including cultural sensitivity.
